September/October Feature Team:
Bull Run Cloggers
For more than two decades, the Bull Run Cloggers have been
entertaining audiences throughout the Northern Virginia region and
beyond.  Based in Manassas, the group is currently celebrating their
25th anniversary.  As clogging has evolved over the years, so have the
Bull Run Cloggers.  Members have come and gone, and routines and
costumes are constantly changing.  The group’s current repertoire
includes all types of music: country, bluegrass, Celtic, gospel and
modern pop.

The Bull Run Cloggers perform at a variety of venues.  In addition to
dancing at local festivals and fairs, the group members often donate
their time by performing at senior centers, nursing homes, and charity
fund-raisers such as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the
Joe Gibbs Country Fair and Auction.  To prepare for the 20 to 30 shows
they do each year, the dancers practice every Monday night in Manassas
at American Legion Post 10, located at 9950 Cockrell Road.  They
receive support and funding from the Prince William County Arts
Council, and are members of the council and the Prince William
County Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce.

One thing that has remained constant over the years is the group’s
dedication to the preservation and promotion of clogging as an art
form.  To further this mission and share their love of clogging, the
group teaches lessons on Monday evenings.   Each year they also
sponsor the Potomac Double Down teaching workshop, featuring
national and local instructors.  The workshop is well-attended by
members of clogging groups from Virginia and nearby states, and offers
a wonderful opportunity for cloggers to network, learn new dances,
and share ideas.

Dressed in their distinctive red, white and blue, the Bull Run Cloggers
are proud to put their patriotism on view.  They have several patriotic
dance routines, including Patriotic Polka, Red White & Bluegrass, and
a medley of the armed services songs.   These dances were featured
prominently in the show the BRC performed at the National Christmas
Tree Music Program on the Ellipse in Washington, D.C. in December of
2008.   Several Christmas songs were included, of course.  During our
performance of Frosty the Snowman one of our long-time members,
Harry, played the part of Frosty, and that old silk hat did its trick.  Who
knew that Frosty was a clogger?

In April 2009 the Bull Run Cloggers had the pleasure of appearing on a
local cable TV show, “Communicating Today”.  The show is a production
of Fairfax Public Access Channel 10 and is hosted by John Monsul.
Thanks to John and his wonderful crew, our television debut was a
memorable experience, and we are grateful to them for giving us this
opportunity to show the viewing public why we love to clog.

Membership numbers have ranged from 4 to 30 dancers over the years.
We currently have 12 dancers, including long-time member and show
director Dale Fisher. Harry Thompson and Terry Kapp are the dedicated
instructors who teach our new students, and Cindy Pitts schedules
shows and maintains the website.  Our members all work hard at
various tasks including costuming, bookkeeping, and setting up sound
equipment, and we are lucky to have a small but enthusiastic road crew
to assist us.  We know that all that hard work and practice time pays
off once we get on that stage.   Performing together and seeing the
happy faces of the audience makes it all worthwhile.

Instructor/Choreographer
Welcome
Cloggers!
Terry Kapp
Bull Run Director, Choreographer and Instructor
Terry was exposed to clogging when she and her
two daughters watched as the Bull Run
Cloggers performed at the annual Haymarket
Day festival. Her two daughters caught the
clogging fever and just "had to do it!" It wasn't
until a year and a half later, toes tappin', Terry
just couldn't sit on the sideline and watch! A
member of the Bull Run Cloggers since 1995
she has performed with the group in such
varied locations as Disney World, Washington
D.C. on the 4th of July, and aboard Carnival
Cruise ships. Over the years she has served as
Director, Choreographer, and Instructor for the
group and has served as the Coordinator of the
Potomac Double Down Clogging Workshop, a
regional workshop held in February with both
National and local instructors that draws
enthusiastic cloggers from the surrounding
states. As a former aerobics instructor,
gymnast and competitive twirler, she brings to
clogging her experience in other choreographed
performance groups, such as the Washington
Redskins Cheerleaders, the Cardinals Drum and
Bugle Corps, and the Silvertone Majorette and
Drum Corps, for which she served as a Director
and Instructor.

Terry is an Instructional Resource Teacher with
Prince William County Schools and teachers
technology to wonderfully inquisitive
elementary students.
